  8.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To describe the development of a model of counseling and
  9.        other services offered to health care workers (HCWs) caring for the HIV
  10.        patient. METHODS: A mailed survey was conducted of 541 (HCWs) (80%
  11.        response) in Austin, Texas to investigate current stress levels, and
  12.        psychological barriers in their work with HIV patients. Data was
  13.        collected during the fall of 1992. The model was stratified by
  14.        professional disciplines. Based upon needs assessed, a pilot support
  15.        group was developed. A team of 2 counselors was recruited to interview
  16.        group participants and facilitate support activities. RESULTS: A
  17.        flexible and replicable model of mental health support meets the demand
  18.        for counseling identified by (HCWs) to counteract the stress, anxiety,
  19.        depression and other feelings resultant from HIV patient care. The model
  20.        includes: (a) an assessment interview with individuals volunteering for
  21.        support group participation; (b) counselors determine psychological and
  22.        social needs to match participants with appropriate intervention
  23.        strategies; (c) on 12-week cycles, educational and support groups as
  24.        well as individual therapy is provided. Maximum group size 8-10
  25.        individuals, organized by occupations. CONCLUSIONS: Attendance and
  26.        evaluations of participants suggest a high level of commitment and
  27.        involvement in the program.
